Alaffia's natural West African palm oil is harvested from the Maritime region of Togo, an area which stretches from its capital town of Tsevie to Kpalime. A Fair Trade cooperative based in Sokodé uses traditional methods to extract it and provide a living for local small-scale farmers. Sadly, more industrialized crops grown on cleared rain forests or peat swamps have put animals like Orangutans at risk as their habitats are destroyed. For centuries, sustainable small farms in West Africa have utilized the native oil palm crop as part of multi-cropped systems. Unfortunately, this traditional practice is being endangered by large scale operations seeking to meet global demand for products containing palm oil--and notably absent from these regions are Orangutans, creatures entirely specific to Southeast Asia and Indonesia.
